Fireworks

Read through the fireworks and choose five that you think might interest your child. Allow him or her to select 1-3 of them.

  • How does music make you feel? Listen to five, ten, or twenty songs. Identify and name the emotions you feel when you listen to the songs. Are there certain times when it is better to listen to one song or another? Write your thoughts in your journal.

  • Music affects mood and emotion, alertness and receptivity; it changes your brain-wave patterns for better or for worse. Take advantage of the power of sound by noting down various activities of everyday life and exploring your ideal musical accompaniment. The orchestrate your life accordingly. What will you play when you wake up? What will you use while you're studying or doing chores? What music would you like to fall asleep to?

  • Play in “junk” band jam session.

  • What do you think Leonardo’s favorite songs might have been? OR, if Leonardo were alive today, what do you think his favorite songs would be? Make an album of “Leonardo’s Top Hits.” Complete it with album cover art.

  • Write a letter to a friend in the form of a poem.

  • Read books (fiction or non-fiction) about music and poetry.

  • Work on your genius project.

  • Learn a new instrument or improve on one you already know.

  • Attend a musical performance.

  • Prepare a musical performance to share at the closing celebration.

  • Make a lute or other period instrument.

  • Write some poems of your own.

  • Write a song.

  • Like Leonardo did for the Duke of Milan, make your resume and explain your strengths and abilities.

  • Leonardo referred to the art of music as “the shaping of the invisible.” Create a playlist of your life. Play it any time you need a pick-me-up.

  • Choose a music composer from any time and genre. Immerse yourself in this person's music for one week to develop a richer appreciation of his work.

  • Make a mind-map of a poem. Use this mind map to help you memorize the poem.

  • Listen to a recording of an orchestra. Identify the different instruments you hear.

  • Listen to a vast range of different styles of music. As you do, make drawings that express the feelings you feel with each different style.

  • Play some math games.
