Fireworks

Read through the fireworks and choose about five that you think might interest your child. Allow him or her to select 1-3 of them.

  • Write a story about an anthropomorphic animal.

  • Get a large frame or hula hoop. Take it outside and set it on the ground. Write down everything you can observe within the frame or hoop. What plants are there? Anything from the animal kingdom? What is in the dirt? What man-made items do you see? Write down descriptions of each thing you see in the frame or hoop. You may need to look up more information about some of these things.

  • In the animal world, when creatures are faced with things that they don't like, their instincts tell them they can fight or run away. As humans, we have more options. Write about what you can do in each of these situations:

  • Situations that Make Me Frustrated

  • Situations that Make Me Worry

  • Situations that Make Me Happy

  • Situations that Take a Lot of Time

  • Think of an animal. Play 20 questions with someone until they guess what animal you are thinking of.

  • Play some math games:

  • Use mosaic tiles to “color” a monkey or other animal.

  • Make a collection of songs about animals.

  • Play an animal charades game with family or friends. One person chooses an animal to act out and everyone guesses the animal.

  • Make sock or paper bag puppets of animals. Write a script of an adventure for the animal characters. Perform the story as a puppet show.

  • Spend fifteen minutes outside. Write down each living thing you see and how many of them you see. Make a chart to illustrate your findings.

  • Write a short essay about what people think about extinction. Are humans to blame? What can and should we do to prevent further extinctions? Does everyone agree on the answers to these questions?

  • Visit a zoo.

  • Go on a nature walk.

  • Write a story with animals that can walk and talk like humans. Let the story represent a real-life event.
